High Fibre Spokes

After an absence from the Australian market, Spinergy wheels are again available Down Under. They are distinct and quite recognisable thanks to their ‘PBO’ spoke design. Rather than using stainless steel or alloy, Spinergy employs around 30,000 strands of ‘polyphenylene bensobisoxazole’  fibre in each spoke. This creates a light and flexible spoke that can also handle very high tensions—Spinergy claims three times the strength of stainless steel at half the weight. Overall, the wheels are not particularly light – 1,728g actual weight for their lightest XC wheels; the 23mm wide Xyclone Disc pictured here – but the spokes won’t bend due to stick damage like the traditional ferrous offerings and they should offer an excellent fatigue life. Expect to pay around $1,580 for the Xyclone Disc wheels.
