KTM Lycan - First Look
For 2017 KTM has totally revamped their Lycan trail bike. While the amount of travel hasn’t changed – it still offers 125mm on the rear combined with a 130mm fork – the suspension layout and frame design has changed completely.
The shock is now tucked under the top tube with a swing-link to protect it from side loads and control the leverage rate. With a single pivot down near the bottom bracket, the rear end is formed in one piece with no bearings to wear or replace—it relies solely on built-in flex to move through its travel.
With this new generation Lycan, the geometry has also been modernised. First and foremost the Lycan is an XC trail bike – built to go up as much as it’s made to go down – so the 68.5 degree head angle isn’t super slack for a 27.5 wheeled bike. The 433mm chainstays are nice and short for a snappy ride feel and relatively long reach figures (437mm on a medium and 454mmfor the large) allow you to run a short stem without feeling cramped. The frame is also quite compact, offering plenty of standover clearance.
As pictured, the Lycan 273 SE1 sells for $3,799 and comes with a RockShox Revelation RL fork and Shimano SLX/XT 1X11 drivetrain. The 2017 Lycan range goes from $3,199 for the 273 SE2 up $6,299 for the Lycan 272, which comes with full Shimano XT 11-speed, Fox suspension and a KS dropper post.
