2016 Giant Odyssey

The Otway Odyssey has been a regular on the Aussie MTB calendar since 2007 and this year well be the 10th running of the event. While it’s always been a popular event – the inaugural Odyssey sold out and they’ve had over 1,000 riders taking part ever since – the format has morphed somewhat over the years.

Earlier editions started in Apollo Bay on the coast before heading inland, over the Otway Ranges to the small town of Forrest. There were some monster climbs along the way and it earned the billing of the ‘hardest MTB marathon in Australia’ — not something you can really prove or disprove but there’s no denying it was a tough event!

After five years the Odyssey moved to Forrest for the start and finish. Aside from making it logistically easier for participants, it allows the course to make the most of the trail network that surrounds Forrest — essentially it maximises the fun factor!

While the elite riders will always be drawn by the prestige of competing in the Odyssey – and there’ll be no shortage of top level competition for the 2016 edition – it’s the terrific trails that appeal to most. This year the Odyssey promises to be more inclusive than ever.

In addition to the main 100km Giant Odyssey and the 50km Giant Shorty races, there will also be a new medium distance Giant Rookie; a 30km  ride designed for novice mountain bikers and capable junior riders who are looking to work their way up to bigger challenges.

In other evolutions, the Giant Pioneer will be shortened from 15km to 10km to be even more welcoming to kids and there’s also a new ‘Grommets Ride’ for little kids on pedal bikes and balance bikes, with several other riding activities centred around the event expo precinct.

The event incorporates a massive festival, food vendors, a beer garden, live music and a MTB expo.

So mark Saturday the 20th of February into your diary and check out the Giant Odyssey page for all the details.
