Bontrager 29-1 Tyre

Bontrager’s tyre naming is intended to reflect their intended use. A higher digit at the end means they are geared more towards providing traction while a lower number means rolling resistance is a priority—their full-on downhill tyres rate as a ‘five’ for example. The 29-1 shown here is one of their faster-rolling 29er options for cross-country use (the absolute fastest is the semi-slick 29-0). Optimised for hardpack and loamy trails, the 29-1 features tightly spaced centre blocks for smooth rolling while the cornering knobs are more widely spaced for better penetration. Bontrager offers two casing types in this tyre; the Expert version is lighter and more affordable ($60) while the Team Issue ($70) tyres feature tougher sidewalls. Aside from being officially classed as tubeless ready, the Team Issue casing is meant to improve tyre stability when running lower air pressures and offer better cut resistance. The 29-1 is available in two widths; 2.00 and 2.20. With the Expert casing, the claimed weights are 540g and 630g (2.00 and 2.20) while the Team Issue casing adds an extra 60g to these figures.
