We’ve just got our hands on (or feet into) the latest top-end shoes from Italian brand Fizik. We’ll be doing a detailed review once we’ve had them on the trail for a few months, but here’s a quick first impression.

The M3B uses a full unidirectional carbon sole with a perforated Microtex upper. The red coloured tread blocks appear are quite hard, which bodes well for their longevity but we’ll have to see if this comes at the expense of traction when off the bike. The rearmost section of tread is also removable and replaceable via a couple of screws that you can see inside the heel cup.

A single Boa dial pulls the uppers tight and it allows you to fine tune the tension incrementally without releasing the shoe fully (as is the case on some Boa equipped shoes).

Without cleats a pair of size 42.5 shoes weighed 755g. That’s not the lightest Boa equipped shoe that we’ve come across but first impressions suggest the M3B should more robust than the lightest XC race shoes, which are often just a road shoe with a few token tread blocks thrown in. They’re not cheap though, as these Italian made slippers will sell for around $399.

Stay tuned for more…
