Riding on the wave of recent trail project announcements, Western Australia’s minister for environment and heritage, Albert Jacob recently launched a mountain biking a master plan for the south western region. Developed in conjunction with the WA Mountain Bike Association, local clubs and peak cycling body West Cycle, the ‘South West MTB Master Plan’ aims to create a cohesive series of high quality trail networks. As always, the goal is to develop the area as a world class MTB destination.

To start with the plan identifies Collie, Margaret River and Pemberton as priority areas with purpose-built trails destined for Parks and Wildlife managed lands. The broader plan encompasses an area stretching from Bunbury to down to Pemberton.

With solid government and community level support, this scope of this development appears to be huge — currently they have 495km of trail pegged as the goal. West Cycle CEO Matt Fulton predicts it will attract $12.94 million per annum in visitor expenditure and create an additional 73 jobs.

We’re certainly looking forward to seeing the results!
