Race Face Chainring

SRAM certainly stirred things up when they introduced their XX1 and X01 drivechains, but they aren’t the only company with dedicated single chainrings that eliminate the need for a front guide. Race Face now has a chainring with alternating wide and narrow teeth, but unlike the SRAM chainrings, they use a regular 104mm bolt circle and will a wide range of standard cranks. Whilst there are similarities, they certainly aren’t a straight-out copy of the SRAM product. The teeth aren’t as deep and squared off, and the Race Face design is said to originate from an expired patent from the late 1970s. Whatever the case, the Race Face product should allow for a clean and guide-free drivechain without having to buy a whole new crankset. Sizes start from just 30 teeth and go up to 38 in two-tooth increments. The Race Face Narrow/Wide rings sell for around $80 and come in anodised red, blue, green and black.
